you ever notice how to bureaucrats trans people are whatever gender is most expedient for them? transgender woman gets denied a change of gender, she goes outside topless and gets arrested on public indecency charges that only affects women. not woman enough to change her gender, but woman enough to go to jail. this trans woman veteran from ww2 got married after changing her gender on her birth certificate, and after her husband died she was denied widow’s benefits because social security said gay marriage wasn’t legal in the state they were married in. didn’t matter that legally she was a woman and he was a man. she fought that decision and won, but she still was woman enough for her state but not woman enough for the feds

being trans isn’t always about people deliberately misgendering you, sometimes it’s about them deciding what gender would fuck you over the most at any given time. you’re not a woman until it’s expedient for them, you’re a woman until they’d have to actually give you benefits. it’s a bitch and a half

this is why adding a third gender option to birth certificates and driver’s licenses and passports is pointless; regardless of what letter it is, m, f, or n, you’re going to be treated by whatever authority figure sees you however they decide. it’s far better to simply remove gender from documents like those

Norwegian prisons are nicer than my apartment.

holy shit dude

I was really shocked by this and dubious, so I decided to read further. There’s a great article about this here: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-35813470

As it turns out, this is more like a halfway house. Prisoners usually begin their term in a prison more like one we’d typically recognize – bars on the windows, locked in their cells. But the emphasis there is on successful reintegration into society.

As their sentence progresses, with good behavior, they can move into a facility more like this, where their freedoms are still restricted, but they can do things like network with people outside of prison, search for employment, cook and clean and look after themselves, and begin making plans for their reintegration into society.

As a result, Norway has one of the lowest rates of recidisvism. 20% as opposed to America’s 76%.

It seems like a shocking idea to us because of where and how we live, but apparently, Norwegians are addressing the real problem. When you take people who can’t function well in society, and then…help them do that?…they….do. Without the crime-ing.

Turns out treating people like human beings makes them more likely to act like human beings….

But won’t that incentivize some people to go back there since they get treated so well and get a nice room versus the streets?

If you read the post above, it says Norway’s recidivism rate – that is, the rate of released criminals who go on to be arrested again – is 20% versus 76% in the United States, so for the most part, no.

Isn’t that white-lined black cross on a red field flag a Nazi flag? Are we going to talk about how wonderful it is a Nazi gets a nice halfway house?

TIL a man once sued McDonalds for $1.5 million because of “emotional distress” he suffered after receiving just 1 napkin with his meal.

via reddit.com

Except no that’s not what happened, that’s not why he sued, he sued because when he went to ask for more napkins, the staff started racially harassing him, all over fucking napkins. As for the amount, ut was probably exaggerated by the lawyer so when the court shrinks it, McDonalds would still have to pay at least something.

There are no such things as frivolous lawsuits made by individual people.

McDonald’s (and most businesses) have insanely good pr departments. The woman who sued McDonald’s for being burned by their coffee was turned into the face of “people will sue over anything” because suing over coffee being hot sounds ridiculous, right? Except for she was literally burned to the bone. The pictures are nauseating. What she went through was horrifying.

If you ever find yourself ridiculing an individual on a company’s behalf you’re probably just repeating pr propaganda

READ IT and remember next time someone talks about some “ridiculous” lawsuit that’s just a sign of how supposedly easy it is for individuals to make bucks off suing poor, helpless huge corporations for oh, no good reason at all.

Who wants you to believe that? Who benefits?

Yeah.

I’ve researched every single frivolous lawsuit I’ve ever been told about. Every one, every single one, is either not actually frivolous once you learn the specifics of the case, or is an urban legend and didn’t actually happen. Literally have never seen a single one that was a real frivolous lawsuit.

Terrance Mannery: hero

shit like this is why i’m sick of aces going to pride with flags and banners and horns and yelling “ace pride” (which let me tell you, nyc pride 2017 was a fucking doozy for that shit)

this doesn’t happen to you. it just fucking doesn’t. but when it happens to us, you pretend like you’re a victim too even though you could’ve used your privilege like terrance mannery did. mannery knew his place at pride. kept his distance, didn’t take up space, didn’t try to show how unhomophobic he was until he leapt into action and stopped what could have easily become an angry mob. he is a hero. you’re nothing but cultural parasites and wannabe victims.

apologies to the antifa who run this blog for injecting discourse they didn’t ask for onto this post, but as a trans lesbian who has to contend with being semi-closeted in a transphobic household, i cannot abide by it.

this is so petty but i really wish white people would stop using “the color of someone’s skin” as a stand-in term for “race.” they are not the same thing. this is not about the color of my skin, i am asian and paler than you yet you still hate me

it’s the same as when they’re like “i don’t care if you’re black, white, brown, green, purple…” as though racism is just about someone’s appearance and not deeply entrenched scientific, medical, and social categories for the express purpose of oppression and violence

can we please bring back “in poor taste” as a concept

Because at some point it got folded in under “problematic,” and now every damn thing that has Unfortunate Implications or deals with sensitive topics indelicately enough to raise hackles or gores somebody’s sacred cow is treated as a grave injustice or a threat to society. Online activism culture has lost the vocabulary to express “this deals with touchy stuff in a way many people might find inappropriate, and you should probably avoid it if insensitivity on this subject gets you angry/upset, but it’s not promoting hateful ideas or demeaning people or affecting anything but my opinion of the creator’s sense of tact.”

I think this really an important post.

We’ve fallen into such a rut of “everything is right or wrong, no inbetween” that stuff that’s merely in poor taste is conflated with things that are actually offensively malicious.

this is so well worded like i been trying to say this for awhile thank you

Damn. This is the thing.

I also kinda dislike that people started saying ‘problematic’ when they could be specific about what someone did wrong. It becomes this vague scary thing that someone ‘said something problematic’ and you don’t know whether they passionately defended nazis or made a clumsy joke about retail workers. And because we don’t know what someone means but we do want to be safe a lot of us just assume to worst and avoid people labelled ‘problematic’. This makes is a very effective tool to bully out people for minor flaws and to reinforce purity culture and disposability culture.

When we talk about being fat-positive and we say, “weight is not an indication of health,” I will reblog it. But I want us to also say, “health is not an indication of value.”

I could be at any weight and I will never be healthy, because I am chronically ill. Someone might be chronically ill and fat, or they might be chronically ill and not fat, and it really doesn’t matter.

When you make it about health, you’re saying health is the pinnacle of human achievement, and you’re shitting on those of us for whom health will always be a pipe dream.

Oh
Oh

Pride month is hard for me. You see posts about Marsha P Johnson and stuff but there isn’t stuff like that for me. I know that there were aces and demisexuals and aromantics fighting just as hard at Stonewall and afterwords but why are there names nowhere. Why don’t I have anyone.

i am so fucking exhausted i don’t even know where to start with this

for marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera and other lgbt people being out in public was literally illegal. cops would check your genetalia and if your clothing didnt match what was deemed “right” you got arrested, you got your picture in the paper. youd lose your job, often your family, youd be harassed on the street. being gay was illegal. being trans was illegal. stonewall was a riot against police brutality on the basis that self expression for lgbt people was entirely illegal and there were few fucking places people felt even moderately comfortable enough to go and be openly themselves.

no cishet aro or cishet ace was rolling up to stonewall to dance. no cishet aro or ace was ever stripped of their dignity in front of their entire world and incarcerated for being aro or ace. you dont have stonewall “heros” because it doesn’t apply to you. the biggest “asexual activist” is a cishet white man named david jay who is openly homophobic and firmly believes in the inclusion of kink as a subsection of the lgbt community lmao

im not saying there were no cishet asexual people fighting for gay rights and all that shit but asking for an ace “”stonewall hero”” is completely ignoring the fact that stonewall wasnt for cishet aces!!! it had nothing to do w cishets and claiming it did, claiming that any sort of cishet involvement is as or more important than trans women of color or any lgbt people is offensive and ridiculous

also marsha p johnson was murdered. happy fuckin pride month

Maybe the fact that ace people don’t have anyone dating back to stone wall isn’t because we weren’t persecuted… Maybe it’s because no one ever accepts that asexuality is real. At that time anyway. Ace people have been told over and over that their sexuality isn’t real. That’s being persecuted. Torn apart. Invalidated. For that, we deserve to show our pride and our belonging to the queer community. Even if an ace person has one type of attraction to same gender, doesn’t mean they aren’t oppressed for another type of attraction they have…

this is such an incredibly ignorant and self involved response i’m not even going to engage. cis hetero aros and cis hetero aces do not and never will belong in the lgbt community.

anyway donate to miss major’s retirement fund or the sylvia rivera law project

hey btw the reason lgbt bars in particular are the most common lgbt venues and a staple of lgbt culture is because a huge chunk were owned by the fucking mob

the mafia in new york in particular (yknow where the stonewall inn is) founded and owned lgbt venues because new york state liquor laws were against “disorderly premises” and “homosexuals soliciting partners” counted as disorderly and the mafia saw a profitable market in lgbt people who had no place to go. they gave them a place to go. the liquor served at stonewall was traded underground or stolen, because they couldnt operate with a liquor license. the mob payed off the police monthly, but there were still deputies who refused this money and raided anyway.

there were no fucking cishet aces or aros at stonewall because it wasnt just a “fun venue where ur free to be urself :)” it was a fucking illegal operation with shitty bootlegged alcohol and no running water for dishes. the only people there were gay people, trans people, and the mafia.

im sure there were ace and aro people at the time who were activists but i would bet my entire fucking right arm that NONE OF THEM were at the stonewall inn the night the riots started, because not only were the patrons already breaking the law and under threat of assault by being openly gay and trans and being at an lgbt venue, but they were also literally in the middle of the fucking crossfire between the mafia and police.

you lot only fucking joined it when it got safer and profitable. THATS WHY you dont have any fucking ace or aro or demisexual stonewall heroes.
