Mr. Rogers had an intentional manner of speaking to children, which his writers called “Freddish”. There were nine steps for translating into Freddish:

  1. “State the idea you wish to express as clearly as possible, and in terms preschoolers can understand.” Example: It is dangerous to play in the street.
  2. “Rephrase in a positive manner,” as in It is good to play where it is safe.
  3. “Rephrase the idea, bearing in mind that preschoolers cannot yet make subtle distinctions and need to be redirected to authorities they trust.” As in, “Ask your parents where it is safe to play.”
  4. “Rephrase your idea to eliminate all elements that could be considered prescriptive, directive, or instructive.” In the example, that’d mean getting rid of “ask”: Your parents will tell you where it is safe to play.
  5. “Rephrase any element that suggests certainty.” That’d be “will”: Your parents can tell you where it is safe to play.
  6. “Rephrase your idea to eliminate any element that may not apply to all children.” Not all children know their parents, so: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play.
  7. “Add a simple motivational idea that gives preschoolers a reason to follow your advice.” Perhaps: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is good to listen to them.
  8. “Rephrase your new statement, repeating the first step.” “Good” represents a value judgment, so: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is important to try to listen to them.
  9. “Rephrase your idea a final time, relating it to some phase of development a preschooler can understand.” Maybe: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is important to try to listen to them, and listening is an important part of growing.

Mr. Rogers Had a Simple Set of Rules for Talking to Children – The Atlantic

Rogers brought this level of care and attention not just to granular
details and phrasings, but the bigger messages his show would send.
Hedda Sharapan, one of the staff members at Fred Rogers’s production
company, Family Communications, Inc., recalls Rogers once halted taping
of a show when a cast member told the puppet Henrietta Pussycat not to
cry; he interrupted shooting to make it clear that his show would never
suggest to children that they not cry.

In working on the show,
Rogers interacted extensively with academic researchers. Daniel R.
Anderson, a psychologist formerly at the University of Massachusetts who
worked as an advisor for the show, remembered a speaking trip to
Germany at which some members of an academic audience raised questions
about Rogers’s direct approach on television. They were concerned that
it could lead to false expectations from children of personal support
from a televised figure. Anderson was impressed with the depth of
Rogers’s reaction, and with the fact that he went back to production
carefully screening scripts for any hint of language that could confuse
children in that way.

In fact, Freddish and Rogers’s philosophy of
child development is actually derived from some of the leading
20th-century scholars of the subject. In the 1950s, Rogers, already well
known for a previous children’s TV program, was pursuing a graduate
degree at The Pittsburgh Theological Seminary when a teacher there
recommended he also study under the child-development expert Margaret
McFarland at the University of Pittsburgh. There he was exposed to the
theories of legendary faculty, including McFarland, Benjamin Spock, Erik
Erikson, and T. Berry Brazelton. Rogers learned the highest standards
in this emerging academic field, and he applied them to his program for
almost half a century.

This is one of the reasons Rogers was so
particular about the writing on his show. “I spent hours talking with
Fred and taking notes,” says Greenwald, “then hours talking with
Margaret McFarland before I went off and wrote the scripts. Then Fred
made them better.” As simple as Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood looked and sounded, every detail in it was the product of a tremendously careful, academically-informed process.

This map should be included in every history book.

Oh wow! I’ve been wanting this for ages!

This needs to be in every history book along with a map showing where those nations have been pushed to now.

(I’m gonna be slightly annoying and show off many pretty maps that are not what was asked for before I get to the map that is what was asked for.)

native-land.ca

“One of the most distinctive things about the Native Land maps are the borders….Indigenous identities don’t map (pardon the pun) precisely onto modern European notions of nationality and territory…. Colonialism lives and dies by the map — and the carved-up world is so central to our perspective that many of us today see the earth’s lands primarily as chunks of nations….

The reality is just that borders don’t always function the same as the simplified maps imply when it comes to indigenous history; there is a lot more movement, overlap, and complexity than one nation on each chunk of land.”

The Aboriginal Mapping Network at nativemaps.org is a great site for finding resources (and a whole map community)! They got:

Global ones like LandMark, an “online, interactive global platform to provide maps and other critical information on lands that are collectively held and used by Indigenous Peoples and local communities.”

Living Atlases created by nations and alliances like voicesontheland.org, created the Okanagan Nation

More maps like these ludicrously pretty ones of Hupačasath lands, traditional sites, and place names. There are many, many more, and you’ll probably be able to find your region/people/language. Or just wander around!

-Links to Treaty Mapsthis interactive map from the Canadian government, and historic maps like this series, which I like because it covers the early 20th century, which is often taught in classrooms as “After Indians.” Here are more maps of current populations and reservation lands in the United States.

Are none of these quite what you asked for? Yeah—I’m making a bit of a dig, but it’s not against anyone asking.

It’s against the fact that the map in the original post is from the 1970s. The linguistic theory has evolved since then; this is the map currently used in textbooks and even on Wikipedia. And I’m not talking about the level of detail, I mean there have been genuine changes in how scholars think the languages are related, and that has changed our picture of pre-Columbian historical events. It is very bonkers that the first map, which has been around long enough to look super dated to me, has never been taught this whole time.

This is the map you were asking for.

Land cessions animated by @sunisup from maps by Sam B. Hilliard of Louisiana State University, first published 1972.

I’m never criticizing anyone for starting with basic facts. We all should! I’m criticizing every history teacher you’ve had (and school board who limited the teacher, and college that didn’t prepare the teacher, and…) who didn’t do their job of tellin’ you the facts in elementary school, when you deserved to learn.

Facts about Native history aren’t Secret Wisdom. We don’t need a special reason to learn some facts. Native scholarship and Native scholars are thriving, so let’s explore their work, and question why information that exists has been deliberately overlooked so often.

In the spirit of us imagining what Danny Phantom would be like if it was rebooted today, I went ahead and re-composed the theme!

Feel free to use this for anything, just credit me if you do! If you need the audio file, message me and I’ll send it to you.

This is making the rounds again so I figured I should give the inside scoop as to what made this project.

1) This song is made entirely with orchestra instruments. A real life orchestra could literally play this if they wanted to. The reason for this is because I legit didn’t know there were electronic synths in the program I was using. The full list of instruments used are: a drumset, snare drum, clarinet, flute, electric guitar, trumpet, english horn, tuba, violin, cello, bass, and piano.

2) The instruments chosen for this song are HEAVILY based on the instruments used in Hans Zimmer’s soundtrack for Inception called “Time.” The biggest differences are that I added a flute to mine because I actually play the flute so I think it sounds good, and the clarinet which I added later to act as a harmony to the flute and also act as a buffer to help darken the sound a bit.

3) I used free music scoring software. Like, super free. As in, there’s no way to crescendo or decrescendo (aka once you say a note’s forte, that’s it bitch it’s forte). So I had to try to create the illusion of notes getting louder or softer based on where I put the highs and lows in the measure. I also used the violin’s slight delay and paired it with other instruments to give the illusion of shape. Yayyy mindfucks.

3) I knew I wanted a LOUD ASS piano bass during the bridge, but at the time I had no idea how to separate the two piano clefs in the program. So what that means is if the bass clef was set to double forte, the treble clef would also automatically playback double forte. Originally in the bridge I wanted the treble clef—aka the slow variation of “gonna catch ‘em all cuz he’s Danny Phantom” melody—to fade into the background with the other instruments. But because I didn’t know how to do that, it ended up playing back super loud. I realized then I actually kinda liked it, so I decided to just roll with it. When the second drop hit, I decided to reverse the tune to be “cuz he’s Danny Phantom, gonna catch ‘em all” just to give a lil bit of variation.

4) In fact, the entire thing was a spontaneous thing I made over a weekend. Nothing was planned (aside from the 2 danny phantom melodies used) and literally everything you’re hearing was either made on the spot or made through me messing up and liking it more than what was in my head. Whoops!

5) This sheet music is actually free for downloading/viewing on musescore! So if you play an instrument/are learning to play an instrument and just wanna see how this is, then click here to access the full thing.

We need to have a nomination for “Stupidest thing Tumblr.com has ever believed” and just move into an official Top 10 List.

For my nominations, I’m putting up:

  • If you eat a chocolate bar a very specific way, you will break physics and get infinite chocolate.

or

  • It is impossible that you spelled “Berenstain Bears” wrong and is, instead, more likely that the universe fractured into separate, overlapping realities in the last 20 years.

I can’t decide which is more beautiful. It’s why we need a vote.

this is a picture of the human brain at the moment of death. tragic and beautiful

Fuck. That is a damn good nomination.

if you close your eyes when the train hits your brain will assume you are dead. Some find this comforting.

We’re getting into the good ones now. This is some classic Tumblr.

Two old favourites:

“Bitch, That’s the Tubby Custard Machine” (http://imgur.com/gallery/IObQF)

and the horse dildo that was passed off as someone’s arm. (http://abakkus.tumblr.com/post/48958415162)

This is rapidly becoming a master post of ignorances and I could not possibly be happier.

That disease where you get purple eyes, no period, and no body hair

How have we gone this far without anyone mentioning the bird in the chocolate fountain

cops in america are legally allowed to take people’s property (including large sums of money) purely because they feel like it. it’s called civil forfeiture and there are literally thousands of cases of pigs taking people’s property. that is looting.

i watched this happen to my roommate after the cops kicked our doors in at 6 AM on a weekday for a no-knock raid that, surprise surprise, didn’t turn out anything. they opened his wallet in front of him, took out about $300 and told him that since they had no record of where it came from on premises, that they’d have to take it from him. they took this man’s rent money right in front of him while he was in cuffs and told him “too bad”.

there was also a friend’s car in our drive way that had broken down so they left it over night. the doors were locked and the windows were up, and since the owner wasn’t there, they decided it’d be cool to just bust in all the windows to perform another fruitless search.

In Philly it’s been a HUGE and MASSIVE problem with cops taking people’s bank accounts, cars, electronics and pretty much anything worth any amount of money under a law that lets the DA seize property they think is related to a crime. “Related’ is a vague term though. They once forced a women and her grandchildren out of her home to sell it at auction because her son was found by police with $20 worth of weed.

(Depending on the property in question it can go under Civil Property Seizure or Seize and Seal, they’re not the same law but they work the same)

They don’t have to prove it’s related to a crime before or after, and even if the person suspected of the crime is cleared at questioning or acquitted at trial, you have to go through a MONTHS long process of court appearances (you can’t miss one or be late or you lose, no rescheduling) in hopes that they MIGHT get their stuff back. Most don’t.

Most people don’t think it’s worth the expense of days missed at work and a lawyer to get back a couple hundred dollars or whatever else the police stole. The city makes MILLIONS of dollars each year off this, around $6-10 (The DA doesn’t provide figures)

but tell me more about “good cops.”

because i hate the civil forfeiture system, the NYPD civil forfeiture system keeps no tally of its forfeitures because it would crash their system to compute it, and there may be only one backup of the whole system. a system that seized (an assumed) $68 million in property just in 2013.

https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/642

This bill, introduced by Rand Paul, guarantees that people who are the victims of civil asset forfeiture have a right to a lawyer, and also redirects all funds gained through it to the US Treasury, to discourage police departments from using civil asset forfeiture for financial gain.

Screw the pigs.

All cops are bastards. Every. Single. One. Fuck the police.

Didn’t one cop department use the money gained for a margarita slushee machine?

“police and prosecutors have infamously used forfeiture funds to buy Hawaiian vacations and a margarita machine. Or as John Oliver put it, “They were literally using this money as their own personal slush fund.””

Pride month is hard for me. You see posts about Marsha P Johnson and stuff but there isn’t stuff like that for me. I know that there were aces and demisexuals and aromantics fighting just as hard at Stonewall and afterwords but why are there names nowhere. Why don’t I have anyone.

cishetsbeingcishet:

basementdemo:

i am so fucking exhausted i don’t even know where to start with this

for marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera and other lgbt people being out in public was literally illegal. cops would check your genetalia and if your clothing didnt match what was deemed “right” you got arrested, you got your picture in the paper. youd lose your job, often your family, youd be harassed on the street. being gay was illegal. being trans was illegal. stonewall was a riot against police brutality on the basis that self expression for lgbt people was entirely illegal and there were few fucking places people felt even moderately comfortable enough to go and be openly themselves.

no cishet aro or cishet ace was rolling up to stonewall to dance. no cishet aro or ace was ever stripped of their dignity in front of their entire world and incarcerated for being aro or ace. you dont have stonewall “heros” because it doesn’t apply to you. the biggest “asexual activist” is a cishet white man named david jay who is openly homophobic and firmly believes in the inclusion of kink as a subsection of the lgbt community lmao

im not saying there were no cishet asexual people fighting for gay rights and all that shit but asking for an ace “”stonewall hero”” is completely ignoring the fact that stonewall wasnt for cishet aces!!! it had nothing to do w cishets and claiming it did, claiming that any sort of cishet involvement is as or more important than trans women of color or any lgbt people is offensive and ridiculous

also marsha p johnson was murdered. happy fuckin pride month

Maybe the fact that ace people don’t have anyone dating back to stone wall isn’t because we weren’t persecuted… Maybe it’s because no one ever accepts that asexuality is real. At that time anyway. Ace people have been told over and over that their sexuality isn’t real. That’s being persecuted. Torn apart. Invalidated. For that, we deserve to show our pride and our belonging to the queer community. Even if an ace person has one type of attraction to same gender, doesn’t mean they aren’t oppressed for another type of attraction they have…

this is such an incredibly ignorant and self involved response i’m not even going to engage. cis hetero aros and cis hetero aces do not and never will belong in the lgbt community.

anyway donate to miss major’s retirement fund or the sylvia rivera law project

hey btw the reason lgbt bars in particular are the most common lgbt venues and a staple of lgbt culture is because a huge chunk were owned by the fucking mob

the mafia in new york in particular (yknow where the stonewall inn is) founded and owned lgbt venues because new york state liquor laws were against “disorderly premises” and “homosexuals soliciting partners” counted as disorderly and the mafia saw a profitable market in lgbt people who had no place to go. they gave them a place to go. the liquor served at stonewall was traded underground or stolen, because they couldnt operate with a liquor license. the mob payed off the police monthly, but there were still deputies who refused this money and raided anyway.

there were no fucking cishet aces or aros at stonewall because it wasnt just a “fun venue where ur free to be urself :)” it was a fucking illegal operation with shitty bootlegged alcohol and no running water for dishes. the only people there were gay people, trans people, and the mafia.

im sure there were ace and aro people at the time who were activists but i would bet my entire fucking right arm that NONE OF THEM were at the stonewall inn the night the riots started, because not only were the patrons already breaking the law and under threat of assault by being openly gay and trans and being at an lgbt venue, but they were also literally in the middle of the fucking crossfire between the mafia and police.

you lot only fucking joined it when it got safer and profitable. THATS WHY you dont have any fucking ace or aro or demisexual stonewall heroes.
