Make no mistake. Trans people, especially trans women, are the canary in the coal mine. If the United States government manages to pass legislation making it essentially illegal to be trans again, mark my words it WILL continue on up to sending us right back into McCarthyism and the “kill or imprison anything you disagree with or dislike” policies of the 1950s (not that that hasn’t already been happening under the radar, but it’s going to be More).
There really are people out there who are acting like suggesting genetic testing to “confirm the identity” of a group of people isn’t a wildly dangerous thing for a government to start doing. This is not a door that should be opened.
we’re not the canary. People already died in this mine, it’s unsafe, but those in charge keep sending us in. This government has already illegally incarcerated innocent people, made false arrests and annulled citizenship based on ethnicity, stolen children from loving parents and given them to white, straight, cisgender christians. This government has enacted and encouraged policies around identification, citizenship, proof of being who you say you are and a citizen of where you live, that are only enforced when the people enforcing them decide they don’t like your skin tone, religion, politics. This government has made every effort possible to ensure that the physically and mentally disabled and chronically ill citizens will die faster while also forcing us to thicken the wallets of those who want us gone. This government is doing its damnedest to erode religious protections except for Good Old Fashioned American Christianity, which is being granted privileges and special rights to discriminate against people who don’t fit its narrow view of morality. This government is making the richest people richer, and convincing the poorest people that it’s good for them by turning them against their best allies.
trans people, especially trans women, are not the canary. We’re not a distraction, either, in spite of what some other people are saying. We are yet another in a long list of groups threatened by an administration that pushes fascist policy after fascist policy. And if we’re going to be a metaphor, we should be the last straw.
hot take but transphobia and homophobia are inexorably linked and saying “this thing is transphobic, not homophobic!” or “this thing is homophobic, not transphobic!” is absolutely useless in most contexts. jokes about how ugly and weird “men in dresses”, jokes about someone breaking gender roles, jokes about someone looking like the “opposite” gender… legislation saying that two people of the same legal sex cannot get married or adopt… trans people of every orientation and cis gay people face so many of the same problems!
that’s WHY it’s LGBT! it’s why gay people and straight trans people work together! because homophobia and transphobia and intertwined and linked and you cannot dismantle one without dismantling the other! ignoring either homophobia or transphobia in favor of the other is missing the point!

you people do realize that just because licensed conversion therapy is illegal in some states it’s not like…magically not a problem anymore right? like the laws in most states only ban licensed or medically affiliated conversion therapy. Ex-gay “ministries” and other religiously affiliated or unlicensed groups can still market conversion services in states like California, Nevada, and Colorado so long as they’re presented and run like “voluntary and non-medical services.” Supposedly liberal states have some of the most active and extremist conversion programs in the entire country because of these loopholes. I know so many people who have been subjected to conversion therapy, in both legal and illegal states, whether they were minors who couldn’t leave or young adults being coerced by family, to the point where some of them were sent out of state for weeks on end before returning as completely different and self-hating people. Most programs advertise themselves as being completely voluntary, but it is extremely rare for that to be the case. Allowing unlicensed services to continue also opens up the door for even more extreme abuses, as the methods are no longer regulated by the healthcare system. I’ve had friends experience sexual assault at the hands of “religious guides” at unlicensed ministries, undergo aversion therapy by way of electric shocks and other pain, and experience mind-numbing psychological torture that some will likely never recover from. This is a common experience, and you can find similar narratives littering the internet. Most of these people attend camps and therapy offered by ministry services, which very often fall under the category of “religious counsel.” So you can’t make a blanket statement like “well it’s just illegal in that part of the country” because it’s never that easy for us.
you ever notice how to bureaucrats trans people are whatever gender is most expedient for them? transgender woman gets denied a change of gender, she goes outside topless and gets arrested on public indecency charges that only affects women. not woman enough to change her gender, but woman enough to go to jail. this trans woman veteran from ww2 got married after changing her gender on her birth certificate, and after her husband died she was denied widow’s benefits because social security said gay marriage wasn’t legal in the state they were married in. didn’t matter that legally she was a woman and he was a man. she fought that decision and won, but she still was woman enough for her state but not woman enough for the feds
being trans isn’t always about people deliberately misgendering you, sometimes it’s about them deciding what gender would fuck you over the most at any given time. you’re not a woman until it’s expedient for them, you’re a woman until they’d have to actually give you benefits. it’s a bitch and a half
this is why adding a third gender option to birth certificates and driver’s licenses and passports is pointless; regardless of what letter it is, m, f, or n, you’re going to be treated by whatever authority figure sees you however they decide. it’s far better to simply remove gender from documents like those
