My European Studies professor decided a few weeks ago to take a Friday and instead of following the syllabus, he spent the entire hour and a half comparing Hitler’s actions from a European perspective to that of what Trump is doing in America. He never repeated a single point, and even used video and photos like this to show the comparison.
To make things better, he had us do an in class assignment for participation points. He first played a clip on youtube of one of Hilter’s speeches, subtitled and 3 minutes long. He then played a clip of one of Trump’s rallies. Our assignment? Copy down every single sentence that matched in translation down on a sheet of paper or a word document that wasn’t repeated. The person with the closest amount to what my professor found got a candy bar.
My professor found, in just three minutes of a speech, that Trump matched 65 different phrases/sentences to that of Hitler’s translation.
65 nearly identical phrases used in his speeches. Take a moment to think about that.
Like, according to Trump’s first wife Ivana he kept a book of Hitler’s speeches in his nightstand and would read it periodically… so the overlap is not at all surprising given his obsession with Hitler’s propaganda.

50 Shades of Attempting to Pass Abuse Off as Romance
I know it’s not BTS, but I think that in this fandom, there are a lot of people who need to see this. There are a lot of people who need to be reminded or told that 50 Shades of Grey isn’t a love story, and it’s not sexy or hot. It’s a story about the emotional and physical abuse of a girl. The fact that as a society we are told this abuse is sexy is dangerous. It’sdangerous because then women start romanticizing situations that are abusive, and find themselves allowing men to manipulate them and destroy them. This book and this movie are utterly intolerable. Bdsm is fine. Having dom/sub relationships is FINE (lol y’all KNOW I think that.) but 50SOG is not a depiction of healthy bdsm at all. It’s a horrendous piece of media. And I’ll happily fight with anyone who says otherwise.
Completely different fandom BUT still applies. BDSM is all about communication and consent, which severely lacks in 50SOG. Also to any writers out there, PLEASE research the topic before you write about it. Yeah being tied up is kinky and all, but only if you (and your characters) want it and explicitly communicate that at some point in the relationship.
If the people making and watching these movies actually paid attention, Christian Grey is mentally ill. He has PTSD and behavioural coping methods (not healthy ones) to deal with the fact that his prostitute mother was murdered in front of his eyes by her pimp, only to be found, with him in the room, days later. He was introduced to the BDSM scene by a much older woman and forced to be submissive himself in the same way Ana is.
It’s not erotic. It’s heartbreaking. Christian does find his way in the end. After much work Ana figures out what’s up and forces him to confront it.
The BDSM scenes in which they’re both hot and bothered and enjoying it? They’re great. The ones where Ana is scared and not being respected? Infuriating. Readers (and viewers) NEED to be able to distinguish the differences.
Yes, but Christian, regardless of his reasons, is abusive. And it isn’t actually confronted properly in the books – it’s just a part of their relationship. And that is very wrong. For Ana to stay with him despite these behaviours is a horrible lesson. It isn’t anyones ‘duty’ to fix someone who is abusive, regardless of their reasons.
Also – I’m aware he has a mental illness. Lot’s of people do. But saying what he does is fine because ‘it’s his unhealthy coping mechanism amd he gets over it eventually!’ Is wrong. Having mental issues is absolutely not an excuse for abusive or toxic behaviours, and it doesn’t change how harmful those behaviours are. Therapy exists for a reason, and people who can’t be bothered tp go/refuse to go becasue they don’t think they need it do not deserve a free pass for their behaviour. They either think they’re in the right or know they’re wrong and don’t care, and either was, it’s disgusting.
Not to mention their entire relationship is literally built on abuse.

That I was out playing pokemon go, and people all over the world had started seeing this new pokemon popping up. Like out of nowhere this little thing started appearing occasionally. No word from Nyantic or The Pokemon Company about when or why they had released it. The pokemon was called “sleepytired” and it looked like this.
And you couldn’t catch it, the ball would just go straight through it. People were data mining and shit trying to figure out how to catch this thing but they couldn’t. Eventually they would just have to give up and leave the encounter.
After a few weeks of people reporting sightings of it, and no word from Nyantic, some creepy shit started happening…
What started happening was, if you entered an encounter with a “sleepytired” with the AR on it would manifest in the real world. But it wouldn’t do anything. It would just float there, watching.
So people being curious started doing this whenever they could, and these things would just manifest and stay there. Obviously this was causing problems because these things would just be floating menacingly in local parks and in the local McDonald. And they couldn’t be moved, because anyone who tried to move them or touch them would be struck by sudden, intense, chronic fatigue that seemingly had no cure.
The last part of the dream I remember was watching a news broadcast telling people that pokemon go was now illegal, and to avoid touching or disturbing the creepy little things that are now just about everywhere.
As a cishet male, it took me a long time to realize that just meant “cisgender heterosexual.”
But if we’re talking acronyms, it could have accurately stood for “cargo-included shorts / hides emotions terribly” as well.

we learn worse. when i broke the tower i was building, my student said to me what i say to her, all the time: “it’s okay! we will rebuild it together. things happen, but we can help each other fix them.” my words out of her mouth sounded big, big, big. this idea i’d given her idly, just when i was comforting her in the moments of mess-ups – not to laugh, but to lend a hand.

i remind him we don’t talk about killing at school. i tell him we absolutely do not talk about killing people. and then i ask: where did you even get this idea.

in fifth grade after-school, we make a poster. i write the words “if i could change the world, i would…” in big swooping font. since i spend most of my day with children under 7, i expect answers like “i would have wings” or “i would be a princess.” i expect them to be children.
instead, i get “i would change gun laws so my friends don’t have to die,” “i would stop companies from hurting the environment” “i would keep everybody safe, no matter who they are or where they came from.”
big, big, big ideas. we forget how much kids are sponges. how much they soak up everything. how quickly they learn to read, to understand, to form their own knowledge and passions. what am i supposed to do. they’re bolstered by the internet. i can’t tell them to turn their heads from what they already know is true.
on the playground, we have to call one of the boys in again and explain to him that he cannot run around screaming “grab them by the pussy” even if he heard those words from the president. later, this same boy talks loudly about russia and fake news. i have to kindly ask him to cut the politics down while he’s at school. he’s scaring everyone with talks of nukes.
im scared, everyone. a girl comes up to me and looks at her best friend. he is a mexican student. “is he going to have to leave?” she asks.
and what am i supposed to do.
Kids are our future. I don’t think they should be worrying so early in life. But they are. They’re not having their childhoods. They’re worrying about all that is going around at the moment. Let kids be kids while they can. Let us fight the fight. Let’s lead them to a better tomorrow. Not one that has them fighting for a better tomorrow at 9-10 yrs. Poor babies.
